” With songs that were upbeat and energetic …… It’s impossible to feel anything but happy in its presence”

On Saturday at the Rock and Roll Hotel, Serge “Massama” Dogo and his band, the D,C,-based group Elikeh, played their own take on Afropop, a style of African pop music played on electric instruments and inspired by Western pop and soul music. They also brought in traditional polyrhythms from Togo, where  Dogo was born and raised. With songs that were upbeat and energetic, an Elikeh live show is basically musical Prozac: It’s impossible to feel anything but happy in its presence.

DC Rock Live reviews Elikeh at Rock ‘n Roll Hotel!

There is a lot to absorb but the band plays so well as a unit, you can just drift away, dance and take it all in. Everyone should add some west-African music to their listening experiences and we are fortunate to have that right here in DC in Elikeh.

Groove heavy and politically active Afro-rock spawned from the unlikely country of Togo. Singer, guitarist, composer and founder of Elikeh, Massama Dogo, was born in Togo, but immigrated to Washington, D.C. in 2000. His D.C. based ensemble fuses indigenous Togolese elements with a contemporary flavor in a powerful and memorable manner including noteworthy guitar work and vivacious horns.

Lucid Culture Review: Elikeh’s Afrobeat Makes an Unbeatable Party Soundtrack

Washington, DC-based Afrobeat band Elikeh’s album Adje! Adje! landed on a lot of best-of-2010 lists at the end of last year for a good reason: it’s a phenomenal party album …. it’s the real thing, a mix of Fela-inspired, 1970s style Afro-funk with Ethiopian tinges, traditional Togolese sounds, a defiantly smart lyrical sensibility and a groove that’s every bit as infectious as it should be. There isn’t a single song on here that’s not catchy.
